Claddagh Ring
It's motto, "let love and friendship reign," is evident by
looking at the design. The
Claddagh ring is unmistakable- a heart wearing a crown,
held by two hands. Traditionally, the ring could be worn in
three different ways- all of which expressed the search for
true love. "With these hands I give you my heart and I crown
it with my love."
According to legend, the Claddagh
ring originated in what is said to be the oldest fishing
village in Ireland. Family heirlooms that have been passed
down from generation to generation are said to have been created
as far back as the 17th century. Since the middle of the 20th
century, the ring has again become popular, as an expression
of loyalty, friendship, or the love of one's heart.
Symbolism of the Claddagh Ring:
-When worn on the right hand with the heart facing outward,
it means that the heart is free to be courted.
-When worn with the heart facing inward, the Claddagh
signifies that the heart is in love.
-When worn on the left hand, it means that you are with the
love of your life forever.
-The crown symbolizes loyalty.
-The hands symbolize friendship.
-The heart symbolizes love.
-Sometimes combined with a cross to symbolize faith.
-Traditionally, the Claddagh
band is passed down from mother to daughter on her wedding
day.
